Basic massage in the UK follows the pattern known as Swedish Massage as regularised at the end of the 19th century, which is extended into workplace situations to meet specific needs. The main objectives of the qualification are to provide an understanding of body massage primarily for stress relief, lymphatic drainage and as a basis of massage used for a wide variety of outcomes. This is the first stage and most commonly used qualification type for body massage.
The critical aspect of this qualification is to ensure that the massage is provided in a safe and effective manner for stress relief, lymphatic drainage and reduced muscle tension with solid underpinning knowledge to enable variations to be added with experience and workplace requirements and to provide a platform for further learning.
